Christianity began more than 2000 years ago, when Jesus was born. It is difficult to say exactly when this occurred, since he was not born in the year 0; some historians believe he was born in 4 or 5 BCE. And there are scholars who question the use of his birth as the starting point for the Christian religion. Christianity began as a small sect within Judaism, and it separated from Judaism over the belief that Jesus was the messiah (Jews did not believe that the messiah had come yet).
The Christian religion emerged gradually, after Jesus was crucified and his followers began writing the stories (gospels) about his life. The books of the Christian bible (the New Testament) were compiled over a period of more than 100 years. Thus, Christianity began when it officially separated from Judaism and established its own holidays, customs, and rituals, as well as its own unique scripture. This process began about the year 45 of the Common Era.
Christianity began over 2000 years ago, when Jesus was born-- we do not know the exact date, since Jesus was not born in the year 0. But many scholars would say that Christianity did not really begin as a religion until the Christian church officially separated from Judaism. The original followers of Jesus were a small sect within Judaism, but they ultimately began to establish their own rituals and customs, centered around the belief that Jesus was the messiah. Christianity began after Jesus was crucified, when some of his followers (the apostles) began writing about his life, in what became known as the Gospels. These books and others were eventually compiled into the New Testament, a process that took more than a hundred years to complete.
Islam began about 622 years later, since most Muslims use as the starting-point of their religion the date of the hejira (also spelled hijra), when the prophet Muhammad escaped an attempt to kill him. He and some of his followers fled Mecca and went to Medina.
While Muslims accept Jesus as a prophet, there is no Christianity in Islam; they are two separate religions, with certain similarities but certain major differences in theology, ritual, and practice.
