South African surgeon Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful human heart transplant on December 3, 1967. Experimental heart transplants on cats and dogs had been performed since the 1950's.

I watched what I believe was the first successful heart transplant on a dog. It was performed at the Westminster Hospital in London England in about 1956-7. The dog lived for 10 days. I was working in the department of medical Photography at the time and the transplant was filmed. I would be interested in confirmation of the date.
