WW2 was the last declared war fought by the United States. Declared wars traditionally have to be fought as total wars...otherwise there is no valid reason for declaring war in the first place. Therefore, Declared wars can no longer be fought, since total wars can no longer be fought; due to NUCLEAR WEAPONS. Nuclear weapons can only bring "Mutually Assured Destruction" to both combatants. Consequently the new term of LIMITED WARS were fought against communist aggression in the Korean War & Vietnam Wars. Limited to "Conventional Weapons Only."

War is war. There is one we are particpating in now in Libya. It is like being a "little bit pregnant." So certainly, there have been wars that the U.S. was "in" many times since Vietnam-both incursions into Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia ... War is war.

In contrast to US Military Operations, such as Urgent Fury, Just Cause, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, etc. which are military campaigns (an army in the field for one season and are engaged for a specific military objective, such as removing Iraqi forces from the nation of Kuwait in January/February 1991; which was accomplished), the last US war against a determined enemy; was the Vietnam War. A war in which the Air Forces, Navies, and Armies of each nation fought each other in armed combat.

∙ 12y agoThe last official War won by the U.S. was World War II. The Vietnam War and other wars after WWII were not officially declared "wars" they were classified as "Police Action". If you choose to count those as a war it would be the Vietnam War.
