The words you write will depend on the subject you are writing about. However to convey a formal tone you should avoid phrasal verbs.

Phrasal verbs are words like pick up or put out or turn off. Instead of saying pick up you should use collect, instead of using put out you should say extinguish etc.

Using single verbs instead of phrasal verbs will make your letter/email more formal
