The first thing to check is the bundle of wires in the rubber boot at the top left (driver's side) of the rear hatch as it enters the car body. These wires are prone to chafing the insulation as the rear hatch is opened and closed and the wires can then short to the car body (ground) or any other chafed wires. All the wiring to the rear wiper motor goes through this bundle and can cause many unpredictable faults when power is applied to any of them that has an exposed bare copper conductor. Carefully pry back the rubber boot and inspect every wire for a bare conductor or even a break in the wiring. Repair any problems found (they are color coded to simplify repairing any breaks) and carefully insulate any exposed conductors with electrical tape. Pad the bundle to protect it from future damage and make sure the rubber boot is fully seated to protect the wiring from the edge of the opening in the car's sheet metal.
