What is a example of a genetically modified food and how is it created?
Genetically modified foods are actually quite common today. They are created by farmers using selective cross breeding and by scientists manipulating the food's genetic code. Common examples of this type of food are seedless fruits.
What caused genetically modified foods to happen?
Genetically modified foods happened because man discovered that a gene could be removed from one species and forced into the cells of another species to bring about a desired trait in the host, or that a gene could be removed from an organism, modified in some way, and inserted back into the same organism. In the most common genetically modified foods today (2015), the desired trait is either resistance to a herbicide or to produce an insecticide in the plant itself, although there are some other, less common traits produced through genetic modification.
How long does it take for a GMO plant to grow?
Genetically Modified foods, or GM foods, can be genetically modified with many different goals in mind. This can be for a faster maturation time or it could be for insect resistance, drought resistance, higher yeild, etc. Most GMO foods today are genetically manipulated to be resistant to herbicides or to produce an insecticide within the plant itself. Genetic engineering has no affect on their maturation.

The only people who would have even a semi-accurate account of the amount of cloned food that is being sold today are the companies who are putting it there and government agencies who are allowing them to do it. Where can you buy genetically modified food?
Most of the vegetables we buy today are genetically modified. The "corn" that we buy is a hybrid. Hybrids are genetically modified to be different than their original ancestors. If you are looking for original vegetables, look for "heirloom" vegetables. Those are the ancestors of the things we eat today. Vegetables that are transgenic, meaning they were created in a lab by taking a gene from one organism (usually a bacteria) and inserting it into another organism (corn, soy, etc.) are not yet sold as fresh vegetables in grocery stores. This will no doubt change soon because a GMO variety of sweet corn has been approved for commercial planting. Please note: The explanation about transgenic manipulation above is greatly simplified.
Cons of biotechnology?
Biotechnology is somewhat controversial. Cons of this is that the final or intended result may have altered DNA that may react with the body differently than intended. For example, the bioengineered potato may not be seen as a potato at all by the body.
Why are kids dying younger today?
Children are developing diseases earlier because of childhood obesity. To fight obesity, children should exercise and eat right. Studies have shown this may be the first generation that children may develop diseases or die earlier than the parent's generation. Genetically modified foods, MSG (Monosodium glutamate), and chemicals aren't helping either.

Genetically modified foods or GM foods are foods grown and genes of another plant or living thing is inserted into a plant. It modifies it to the characteristics of the gene inserted such as a flower gene inserted into a pumpkin plant. The pumpkin plant will produce more pollens than it normally does. The gene has to be specific such as to a length of gene about the production of pollens which a pumpkin plant produces less. Specific genes are inserted into plant to make them more nutritional than it does normally so its more healthy to eat. Or the specific gene of a living thing may cause the plant to survive and grow in the cold depending on the living thing and the gene does.

What are GM crops?
GM stands for genetically modified food. GM foods have been artificially changed by scientists in a laboratory. In the past, plants have been improved by breeding them with other, better plants - a natural process which takes years. But with GM foods, it's done quickly and artificially, and lots of people are worried about it. GM crops are crops that have been altered using genetic engineering techniques, so basically using DNA molecules from different sources and combining them to create a new set of genes which are then transferred into an organism to give that organism a desired trait. Commonly these desired traits cause the GM crop to be tolerant of non-selective herbicides (glyphosate or glufosinate) allowing for easier programs to control weeds (reducing the amount of herbicides needed to be applied). Another desired trait that we see today is the gene that makes the GM crop resistant to insect feeding. There is a great deal of controversy throughout the world concerning genetically modified foods, however no study has ever proven that GM foods are harmful in anyway. We have been eating GM food in the United States for close to 20 years.
