In the U.S., the most populated city, New York, is at the Atlantic Ocean, the #2 city, Los Angeles, is at the Pacific Ocean, the #3 city, Chicago, is on the shores of Lake Michigan, the #4 city, Houston, is near the Gulf of Mexico, and so on. That's because at the time most cities were settled, waterways were the primary transportation route, especially for transporting goods to a city.
