The heater core in a 1986 Monte Carlo including SS V8 with air and many other GM makes and years is removed from under the hood by removing one screw after separating the top cover and bottom half of the plastic AC module. First position the windshield wipers vertically by turning on the ignition and the wipers, then turning off the ignition when the wipers are at the top of their stroke. Remove the bottom windshield trim plate. Remove the heater hoses from the heater core. In most cases it is not necessary to drain the system because the hose connection is above the water level. Remove all electrical connections. Remove the passenger side leaf screen and windshield squirter. Separate the top and bottom half of the AC module by removing the surrounding screws, all screws in the center of the module and screws attaching the top cover to the fire wall. It may be necessary to run a knife between the top and bottom halves of the AC unit to break the seal. It may also be necessary to break the hard sealant bead at the firewall. This can be done by tapping with a screwdriver and hammer. Remove the screw at the top of the core and slide the core out. When putting the AC module back together, a new gasket can be fabricated by cutting and piecing household adhesive backed weather stripping.
