Ethnic Malays, trace their main origins from China, Taiwan, Africa and Philippines. The original lineage, began in the Yunnan Province of China. This is where all other Southeast Asians originated as well, Thais, Filipinos, Cambodians, Vietnamese they all too; originated from the Yunnan Province. Malays are called "Melayu" in the Malay language, and according to legend; there was a Chinese kingdom called "Mo Lo Yu". Now, Mo Lo Yu could possibely be the ancient or legend name for the Yunnan Province. But ethnic Malays, do have an origin in China in the Yunnan Province. The lineage, reached Taiwan. Then the Philippines and then finally Borneo and Indonesia. The real Malays, then starting forming their own culture when they reached what is now Malaysia and the Indonesian Archipelago. Since Malays are Austronesian people, they also have origin from the African island of Madagascar. This is also, an origin for most Austronesian people.

MALAYS FROM BORNEO

Ethnic Malays, have a diverse amount of origins. The Malays, that live in Malaysian and Indonesian Borneo, have their origins from Taiwan and Philippines. This is where we debunk the old bogus lie that the original Filipinos were Malays from Indonesia/Malaysia. Which is the other way around, the lineage that started in Yunnan, China reached Taiwan, then the Philippines and finally the Greater Sunda Islands. So a lot of the ethnic Malays from Borneo, have ancient Philippine descent. People, from the Malaysian province of Sabah and Sarawak do not consider themselves to be ethnic Malays. These people, are more related to the ethnic groups in the Philippines. The Tausug are an ethnic group inhabiting Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Though they aren't ethnic Malays, but they are very closely related to ethnic Malays.

MALAYS FROM THE PENINSULA

Ethnic Malays, from the Malay Peninsula (which includes Singapore and West Malaysia), do not have Taiwanese descent. Other than immigrants from Borneo. The ethnic Malays that live in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, do have the same origin from China's Yunnan Province. But they also have Thai descent instead, since the lineage migrated south into Thailand. Then into Malaysia and Singapore.

MALAYS FROM SUMATRA

Malays, make up about 10-40% of Indonesia's overall population while the other are Javanese. A lot of the Malays, live along Sumatra's western coasts. These Malays, also have some Indian origin. Since western Indonesia was a Hindu empire at one time. Malays from Sumatra have a mix, some sharing origins with the Malays from Borneo. Some from the Malay Peninsula. A lot of these Malays, having Indian and Sri Lankan origin. Since Sri Lanka, was a bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia. Not to mention, that Sri Lankans are related to ethnic Malays. There are ethnic groups from Sri Lanka that are closely related.

The origins of the Malay people can be traced to the Malay archipelago, which includes present-day countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and parts of the southern Philippines. The Malay people are descendants of Austronesian-speaking populations who migrated from Taiwan and settled in the region around 4,000 years ago.

Where did the Malays live?

Malays are an ethnic group from Southeast Asia. Their origins, are theorized to have come from Taiwan. Ethnic Malays today, live in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand and Philippines. Basically the Malay Peninsula and the Malay Archipelago. Malays are called "Melayu" in the Malay language. BY COUNTRY Ethnic Malays, make up a majority of Malaysia and Brunei's populations. About 50-60% of Malaysia's population are ethnic Malays. The others are Chinese and Indians. Since Brunei, is a small and nearly-landlocked by Malaysia (although bordering the South China Sea), with a population of roughly 300,000; about 90% of Brunei's population are ethnic Malays. In Indonesia, people think that Malays are a majority in Indonesia. Which is wrong, ethnic Malays only form about 20-35% of Indonesia's population. They live mostly in Sumatra's western coasts, Borneo, Sulawesi and small populations in Java. In Thailand, most of the ethnic Malays live in the southern provinces bordering Malaysia down south.
