The fuel pump inertia switch ( shut off switch ) is a safety device that breaks the electrical circuit so no power goes to the electric fuel pump if the vehicle receives a substantial jolt such as in a collision or even if it hits a really bad pothole . The switch has to be manually reset by pushing the button down that has popped up on top of the switch if no gas is leaking or you don't smell gas
