Mohan

Mohan is the founding father of white Bengal tigers. He was captured as a cub in 1951 when Maharajah Shri Martand Singh and his hunting party found a tigress with four 9 month old cubs, including one white one, while hunting in Bandhavgarh. All except the white cub were shot. The white cub was later captured and housed at the Maharajah's palace. He named it Mohan, meaning "Enchanter".

In 1952, Mohan was bred to a normal-coloured wild tigress called Begum, but they produced only orange cubs because Begum did not carry the recessive white gene. Some of these cubs, which carried the white gene, were sent to zoos and, as a result, white tiger cubs have been born unexpectedly to orange parents in zoos. Mohan was then bred to his daughter Radha (who carried the white gene) and they produced a number of white cubs, including Mohini ("Enchantress") who later founded American lines of white tigers. Mohan died in 1969, aged almost 20. He was the last recorded wild-caught white tiger.

White tigers occur when inbreeding - usually between parents and cubs - produces offspring with two copies of a recessive gene. Although such inbreeding often leads to birth defects, the public appeal of the white tiger has, controversially, led to it becoming a regular practice in captivity[1].

There are several hundred captive white tigers worldwide, and this number increases annually. The captive white tiger population today includes pure Bengals, and hybrid Bengal-Siberians, but it is unclear whether the recessive gene for white coloration came from any of the Siberian ancestors, or only from Bengals.

Latest research says the recessive gene is a Bengal trait only.

Any zoo will be happy to discuss private ownership, provided you can obtain proper licensing and provide for a healthy environment.

There are many rich people that have ultimately sacrificed their children to a wild animal just because their child wanted to own a tiger. In one instance, the young lady got a tiger for her 4th birthday. The tiger was treated as a pet and had its own cage. TWELVE YEARS LATER, something went horribly wrong and the tiger killed her. But what a happy childhood and twelve wonderful years.
