The top is hydraulic. There is a pump in the trunk under a cover on the drivers side. you should be able to visually see the fluid. You can try putting fluid in but if it runs out again you will have to get a new line. There are 4 and VW charges over $400.00 each. The same lines in a GM cost $150.00 with the pump. I wouldn't pay the $1600.00 + so I had a guy repair it at a hyraulic shop. That lasted 2 months until another line went. Then just turn the handle at the bottom and operate it manually. It's not that tough, my wife has no problems with it and it beats giving VW the satisfaction of gouging me.
