Roger Williams brung baptist into America from Europe. The reasons why people are baptist, Methodist, Catholic etc. is because there ancestors was. For African Americans they are in the denomination they are in because there ancestors slave owners was that. In the Jungle of Africa there was no Baptist nor Methodist nor any other type denomination. The more powerful tribes sold the weaker tribes to the White man and the slaves of the White Man went to church with there slave owners. The Black Slaves were always to loud so the White Slave Owner gave the slaves a piece of land and they builded a church on it. Slaves named the church after their Slave Owner because he gave them the land, that is how u get your church names Perry-Grove Baptist, Thompson Baptist Church, Timberland Baptist, Because the Perry-Grove's gave them the Land, the Thompson family gave them the land, the Timberland's gabe them the land.

Usually names of denominations come from something unique that they do. Churches baptized or dedicated their children into the faith. Because Baptists believed that there was a time that a person took responsibility for his own decisions, age of accountability, there should be a sign that you are accepting Jesus as Savior and follow him in "believer's" baptism. This was where Baptists differed from others. Therefore the name Anabaptist began or re-baptists because they baptized twice as a baby and as an adult.

John the Baptist (Bible: New Testament)

Historians trace the earliest Baptist church back to 1609 in Amsterdam, with English Separatist John Smyth as its pastor. In accordance with his reading of the New Testament, he rejected baptism of infants and instituted baptism only of believing adults. Baptist practice spread to England, where the General Baptists considered Christ's atonement to extend to all people, while the Particular Baptists believed that it extended only to the elect. In 1638, Roger Williams established the first Baptist congregation in the North American colonies. In the mid-18th century, the First Great Awakening increased Baptist growth in both New England and the South. The Second Great Awakening in the South in the early 19th century increased church membership, as did the preachers' lessening of support for abolition and manumission of slavery, which had been part of the 18th-century teachings. Baptist missionaries have spread their church to every continent.
