George Bass was one of the earliest explorers of colonial Australia. After arriving in New South Wales in 1795, he undertook a number of journeys.

His first journey was with Matthew Flinders to explore the George's River, which emptied into Botany Bay. After this, he and Flinders explored the coast south of Botany Bay, discovering Port Hacking.

Bass was one of several explorers who was unsuccessful in his attempt to cross the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. While he did not manage to cross the mountains, he did come across several dozen head of cattle from the First Fleet, which had escaped from Port Jackson and gone bush.

Bass also made several trips to Norfolk Island (off the coast of New South Wales) and Cape Town, South Africa, for supplies.

However, Bass was undoubtedly best known for his circumnavigation of Van Diemen's Land, now known as Tasmania. Early maps showed Van Diemen's Land to be joined to the mainland, but after exploring along the southern coast of the Australian continent (later to become the colony of Victoria), Bass became convinced a strait of water must exist. The Governor of the time, John Hunter, wanted conclusive proof, so in 1798, he commissioned Bass and Flinders to circumnavigate Van Diemen's Land. Bass Strait, which lies between Tasmania and Victoria, is named after George Bass.
