After they were exiled from Israel (formerly called Canaan), the Jews were exiled by the Babylonians and later (after returning), were heavily persecuted by the Romans. Thus the diaspora (scattering) began.

Many remained in Babylonia, while others began to settle in North Africa, southern Europe, the Crimea, Arabia, the Near East, and (slowly) further afield (especially throughout Europe).
