Paul's father (a jazz band leader, Trumpet player, and pianist) bought him a trumpet for his birthday when he was fourteen, but Paul exchanged it for a Framus Zenith acoustic guitar, which he began learning to play immediately. (He learned playing by ear. To this day he still does not know how to read or write sheet music!) He wrote his first songs at the age of fourteen, including "When I'm 64" and "I Lost My Little Girl". The latter was written for his mother, who had died of Breast cancer that same year.
Paul was exposed to the piano in his home as a young boy. His "first" instrument was the trumpet, but when Paul realized that he was more interested in rock and roll, he knew that he couldn't play the trumpet AND sing at the same time. Both he and his brother, Michael, acquired Guitars.
He started playing guitar at fourteen. He went to several "Play In a Day" workshops around Liverpool, and also learned from books, and watching performers when they appeared on television.
With a lesson book and sheer determination. He claimed to have practiced until his fingers bled.
He started when he was fourteen.
