Well in 1908, his term as President ended and he didn't want to be re-elected, so he went to Africa in search of "big game". He left his whole Presidency and Progressive record behind, helped his Secretary of War (William Howard Taft) become President, and then he left to Africa for 4 years.

*Extra info: In 1912, he came back and saw Taft being attacked by Progressives. He then ran against him in order to re-gain control of the Republican Progressive Party, but Taft was too strong and won even though Roosevelt had the popular vote. Angry Progressives made up their own party (Bull Moose Party) and Teddy Roosevelt was their elected leader.
