England and America
AnswerAmerican and British soldiers were placed all over England to prepare for the build-up. Many units trained there. The 29th Infantry Division trained 20 months in England. The newly organized units went through a Basic Training, then corps-level tactical training and then amphibious assault training. Each different level of training could be accomplished at various locations. The units had to practise amphibious assaults. One place they practised landing on beaches similar to ones at Normandy was at Slapton Sands. During one of these night-time practise landings, a portion of the 4th Infantry Divsiion(US) was attacked by German E-boats that resulted in the 749 deaths and the loss of 2 LST's, which was in critical shortage.

During the months before the Operation "Overlord" or D-Day, all the allied troops went through extensive training in survival and fitness. They all went through multiple electronic simulations of different situations that could occur on the beach. Some of these were climbing over obstacles, dealing with snipers, and taking out machine posts. Each group would also train to exit the amphibians in an artificial ocean/beach facility. A secret training program called "Iron Man" was put into effect to get each man into peak fitness. They secretly hired a man named Dobbs to run this program. Each troop had to run 20-400s, multiple fartlicks, "Dobbsathon", and other runs like tempo loops. Despite the huge loss that occured during D-Day, the calculations showed that we would have lost double the men if we did not put these programs into effect.
The amphibious invasions in Italy were vital training: Sicily, Salerno & Anzio. Parts of Devon, UK were cleared of civillians to use as training areas. The allies knew they had to get it right, there would not be a second chance.
