Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. accepted the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Sweden. King began his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement in 1955. Having studied Gandhi, he knew what a powerful weapon nonviolence had been in his efforts to liberate India. He decided to follow the path Gandhi and Henry David Thoreau started, and combined non violence with civil disobedience to eventually end segregation in the United States.

Nobel Prizes are announced each October and bestowed by Scandinavian committees for cultural and scientific advances. The awards were established in 1895 by the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite and did not want to be remembered only for the creation of a destructive force. First awarded in 1901, the prizes are presented in the categories of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. The awards are presented in December.

Most Nobel prizes are determined by Swedish committees, but the Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, a group of five appointed by the Norwegian Parliament.

Nobel's will declared that the Peace Prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". A monetary award, determined by the Nobel Foundation, goes along with the prize.

Dr. King received the Peace Prize on December 10, 1964 at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway in recognition of his leadership in the American Civil Rights Movement. At 35, he was the youngest man to receive the award.
