He was vacationing at Campobello Island in Canada, and swam in icy waters, which many believe made him contract polio. He was 39 years old at the time.

Swimming in icy water is not a cause of polio, despite what people believed at the time. He had probably contracted the virus shortly before the vacation and symptoms showed up during the vacation. The virus was everywhere at the time.

He didn't want polio, but he fell into cold water from a ship when he was 39 and couldn't stand the next day.
There were no vaccines for it at the time. It was a very scary time for all of us who live through those days.

If you are talking about Theodore Roosevelt no he did not have polio. But Theodore's fifth cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt did have polio and was confined to his wheelchair his entire presidency, but you would have to research when he got it and how long. I hoped this helped.

He developed polio some 12 years before he was President. He was at his wife's vacation home on Campobello Island, in Canada, off the coast of New Brunwick in the Bay of Fundy.

The was no vaccine against polio when he got it. It is a contagious disease- apparently he came into contact with a carrier of the disease.
