The Maginot Line (in use from 1932 to 1969) was a barrier in northern France, that was built to hold off (mainly) the German Army in case of attack. (EVERY country feared the German Army) It basically surrounded France from the rest of Europe - but had MANY, MANY faults. For starters - the Lufuwaffe simply flew over it!!! And the supply line was so poor - many of the installations simply ran out of ammunition!!! Although the fortifications of the Maginot line were based on very outdated World War I fortifications - some did hold the attacking German Army - but only for a few days.

Yes. Just Google up "maginot line map" and you'll have many options. Many of the fortified positions along the Maginot Line still exist. Recently I was driving from Luxemburg toward Metz, France. When I crossed the border into France I noticed a brown road sign that read "Ligne de Maginot". I pulled over to take a look and sure enough, off to the horizon in both directions were the fortified emplacements of the Maginot Line...round topped pillboxes with what looks to be 75mm guns protruding from the embrasures. That was fascinating! And if you're into WW1 history...don't miss the US cemetery and monument at Château-Thierry France. Western Europe is a GOLD MINE of history!! BTW, the best food is in Belgium. Visit the village of Malmedy, Belgium.

A curiosity and a tourist destination mostly. The French government sold some parts of it, and last I heard some entrepreneurs had converted some of its underground structures to mushroom farming (the edible kind, not the hallucinogenic ones). I believe some others established a hotel in another portion, for war tourists. There are groups in both France and Germany who like to find and explore old wartime fortifications, as a weekend activity.

France only put it on the border touching Germany. But the Germans went around it and destroyed the French. Sucks for them!

From Basel in the south to the border of Luxembourg and Belgium. The point at which the Germans crossed fortifications along the Belgian border were in fact very strong however it took them only 2 days to break through at this point.
