Japan was a German ally, so Germany then declared war on the U.S. and the U.S. then declared war on Germany. Though the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the justification for the U.S. to enter the conflict, U.S. troops were first sent to England in December of 1941 and more in January of 1942. Roosevelt and Churchill had met in secret in August of 1941 and had planned in advance what the U.S. would do when it entered the war. Winston Churchill spent Christmas of 1941 in the White House, keeping an eye on what Roosevelt was doing, and encouraging him to do what was best for England. The common enemy in Europe that Churchill and Roosevelt shared was Adolph Hitler and the Nazis.
