The first military actions took place in Massachusetts, in 1775. The British were driven out of Boston in 1776. The conflict then shifted to New York; the Americans scored some victories in upstate New York, but the British captured New York City. Washington's army camped in Pennsylvania, and famously crossed the Delaware river to attack the British in New Jersey. Military actions in New York and Pennsylvania continued into 1777 and 1778.

The southern colonies were involved in the second half of the war. The British captured Savannah and Charleston and began pursuing the Americans throughout the backcountry of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The war culminated with the northern and southern forces trapping the British army at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781.

So, at one point or another, military conflict occurred in every one of the thirteen colonies. In addition, with the entry of France into the war, there were conflicts between the British and the French in the West Indies, Gibraltar and as far away as India.

All of the battles of the American Revolution took place on U.S. soil. This was an attempt by General George Washington to "tire out" the British. His reasoning is according to many historians the decision that truly did win the United State's independence.
