In most cities there are shelters that give many of the homeless population a place to sleep and usually a meal. The problem is that there are too few shelters and far too many homeless people. The shelters fill up fast, especially in cold weather. The alternative is a night curled up under a tree or bridge, hopefully in a place where they won't be victimized by whomever happens by. Homeless people are quite often targets of crime. The Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul are two organizations that help the homeless and destitute. There are many others by different names, sometimes local churches can provide some relief in their community.

The government Provides homeless shelters where one may go for protection. These homeless shelters provide places in which homeless people can go and they will be taken care of. Homeless shelters have staff that will provide/cook food for homeless people to eat. Donations/charities provide things like clothing, blankets, pillows, toys, books and other things so that this people will have things that they can use. However homeless shelters will ask that all adults try to find work so they can eventually leave the homeless shelter and start a real life.
The city of Toronto, Ontario has about 40 official shelters for the homeless. In times of extreme heat (Summer) or cold (winter), the city provides designated shelters that provide shelter to the homeless in extreme temperatures. Also, a number of churches and other non-profit organizations provide food, clothing and shelter through Community Dinners and Food Banks. Additional INFO can be found in the Related Link below.
