Bananas grow in humid, tropical regions of the world. They thrive in Honduras, as well as in other Central and South American rainforests and in Africa and Southeast Asia. They require very warm climates and need lots of water. They grow best where it rains a lot. In the US, bananas are grown in Hawaii, but only a very small amount. The word "banana" comes from the Arabic word for "finger." Bananas got this name because they resemble fingers that grow together in long rows, which are called "hands." We call them "bunches."

Do banana trees grow in Indonesia?

Yes. Banana trees grow in Indonesia. Banana trees grow anywhere that has fertile soil, adequate moisture, and temperature above freezing. A freeze can kill a banana tree and usually does. There are certain types of banana trees that do not grow in certain places due to endemic diseases. A particular type of banana tree might not grow in Indonesia for that reason. You may not be able to bring a banana tree from one part of the world to Indonesia and expect it to survive. Indonesia may have rules against bringing in bananas from areas where certain diseases exist. You will need to check with Indonesian authorities before trying to set up a banana plantation using certain types of bananas.

Will a chopped down banana tree with no roots still grow if it is replanted and taken care of?

New banana trees grow from the roots of the old banana trees. After a banana tree bears fruit it dies. Then its roots send up several new banana trees. The chopped down part of the tree will probably not grow. The roots will probably send up new trees. You can dig up one of those and get a new tree.

Why is a banana a fruit of the ground rather than a fruit of the tree?

Banana do not grow on trees. Their parent plants are herbs - plants with woody stems and are annuals or semi annuals. The root part of a banana plant is more or less permanent, and from which new stems rise and which then bear fruit.
