Answer:

Although the Navajo Nation is presently in the American states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. It is 27,000 sq miles. Anthropologists and archeologists have traced their origins back to the northwesten part of North America (largely in Alaska, the Yukon, and the NWT) and a tribe of Athapaskan tribes known as the Dene or Dene-ta. In fact the Navajo refer to themselves as Diné. It is thought they entered the Southwest and took up the cultural habits that make them distinctly Navajo ( corn growing, hogan living, Asdzą́ą́ Nádleehé and hózhǫ́ based religion led by hataałii, four sacred mountains) around 900-1100 CE

Archaelogists and historians disagree about the exact date that the ancestors of the Navajo people entered what is now the United States from what is now Canada. The Navajo were sometimes called the Diné people. There is still a tribe called the Dene around the Great Slave Lake in Canada. Reportedly, these Canadian cousins of the Navajo can still somewhat understand the Navajo language used in the American Southwest.

What is generally agreed upon is that they arrived in the present-day Southwestern United States around 1000 AD and that they experienced massive population growth during the 1200's AD.

It is thought that the first people that could be recognized as Navajo arose in the Upper San Juan river basin in what in now New Mexico and Colorado when Apachean speaking people came in contact with Pueblo peoples around 900-1100 CE. Before that, it is thought that people speaking Athabascan languages slowly moved south from Canada and Alaska where most the rest other the Athabascan languages are still today. It is thought they slowly moved south along the Rocky Mountains. Before that the theory says that Athabascan speakers came from North Asian in the second of three movements from Asia. One theory has the Na-Dene languages related to the Yeniseian languages on the Yenisei River which flows out of Lake Baikal. Those people may have come from the Amur River area before that.

The Navajo say that they were created by Changing Woman in Dine' Tah ( the same upper San Juan river area) at about the same time, 900-1100 CE. They say people emerged from three or four previous worlds, each one more complete, and came into this one in a lake in southern Colorado or where two rivers meet in the New Mexico San Juan area.
