Will Chevy 350 main caps work on a 327 Chevy block with out doing any costly modifications?

call performance automotive wholesale in los angeles, they know ALL this stuff.. Dave New answer; All engine main caps or different, no matter what size engine it is. THE REASON IS, When they are making a engine block, The main caps are bolted onto the block and they line bore the main jounals ( Main caps and the block itself ) So the crank will fit that engine. That's way the main caps are marked and you can't swith them around, they have there own place that they will fit. And they will only fit that engine. They will not interchange with no other engine period.... NEVER

How do you take out a chevorlet 305 crankshaft?

The Same way you take out any other engine's crankshaft. You take out the engine, drain the oil on a stand, turn the engine upside down, remove the oil pan, then the connecting rod caps (mark which cap goes to each rod), push the pistons down towards the heads, remove the main caps, then pull out he crank...

What is Con rod bearing and main journal bearing?

The flat spots on a crank are called journals. There are main caps with bearings both sides that hold the crank in the block. The conn rods have similar bearings & they also attach to crank journals. The bearings are c-shaped copper things that go in the conn rod & main caps for the crank.

Do you have to take out a 283 engine in a 55 Chevy to replace the crankshaft?

Yes, the engine must be removed from the car. Are you an experienced mechanic? The engine must be separated from the transmission, remove the flywheel. Then remove the oil pan. Take off the oil pump and set it to the side. Next, the front of the engine must be disassembled and remove the cam shaft drive gear and cam chain so you can lift the crank out of the engine block. Next , you'll need to make sure the rods and rod caps are appropriately numbered or alphabetized so you don't get them mixed up, 1-1, 2-2, A-A, B-B, and so on. This is a must. These are machined pieces and can not be mixed up with other rods and caps!!!! The same thing must be done with the main bearing caps. Number them as 1,2,3,4. Number 5 is unmistakable, it is the rear main and looks like none of the other ones. You can easily do this with a center punch, one punch for number one, two punch marks for two and so on, do them noticeably but lightly I must add. You can do this on the rods also, for marking the rods and caps. These parts may already be numbered. After you remove the rod caps and main caps, you can lift the crank out of the engine block. What happened to the engine for it to need the crank replaced? The repair work to the engine could be more extensive than just replacing the crank. I'll do my best to help you, if need help to fix the engine yourself. If you have the tools to take the engine out, then you can, with help, repair the engine, put it back in and make it run again. My name is Larry. I'll check back here to get the details of the failure from you and let's see if the engine is fixable.

How do you replace the crank shaft?

It's rare to replace one. The journal(s) would have to be so screwed up they couldn't be machined without changing size by a great deal. even if you have a replacement, block and caps will have to be machined so have an engine rebuilder drop it in for you. It is also rare a crank would go with no other serious damage to parts- check the whole engine.

What are bearing caps?

You have rod bearing caps that hold the rods on the crankshaft. And you also have main bearing caps that hold the crankshaft in the engine block. NEUTZ.

Can you reuse your crankshaft after breaking the main caps?

If you are working on your main caps, then you are in an engine rebuilding situation. If they actually broke, you need to find out why, and replace or repair the parts, including the crankshaft, that are bad. If, by breaking, you simply mean that you loosened the bolts, you still need to evaluate the status of the crankshaft and bearings. This involves checking for size, remachining as necessary, replacing parts as necessary, checking bearing clearance, and torquing the cap bolts to specification.
