rotor will point to #1 at TDC.
look on your intake manifold each cyl.has a num.above it.near the frunt of the manifold is your fireing order.bring #1 to t.d.c.(top-dead-center)the rotor button is at #1.cap should be marked.
Almost all v8 engines have the a firing order of 1;8;4;3;6;5;7;2. the rotor rotates counterclockwise. so, as long as you follow the firing order...it doesn't mater where you point the rotor!
Usually against the firewall in the center section
like any other engine turn the engine until the number one piston is top dead center and then install the distributor where the rotor button is on the plug wire for number one cylinder it should start there and final adjust by twisting distributor until running smooth
