At this point in time there is only speculation as to the origins of the name 'Ganderton'. The name, as spelled, is English. the earliest Ganderton i could find died in 1599 (he was a weaver) in the Midlands of England. There are at or about this time many Gandertons in the area. Throughout the next two centuries the name spread, particuliarly toward London. after that the name was carried to Canada, Australia, and the U.S..

There is speculation that the name is derived from the Midlands town of Conderton not far from Tewksbury and Pershore. This is also known as Gonderton on some early maps.

Another less likely theory is that the name is a mispronunciation of the Canterbury area, ie one from the town (ton/bury) of Canter slurred by generations before writing was taught to the masses from Canterbury to Canterton to Ganderton.

Also there happened to be families of Gandertons in what became Germany during the 1800's. There doesn't appear to be records of from where those Gandertons originated.

A popular website indicates that this English surname derives from the Anglo-Saxon surname Anderton, which is first found in the county records of Lancashire, north of Liverpool.
