The highest density of nesting (and breeding) pairs has been recorded as being located in Alameda County, California, USA. Some Goldens are migratory, while others are sedentary. They are found in mountain regions, tundra, grasslands, shrublands, coniferous forests, and even marshlands. They may be found at elevations from sea level, up to to 12,000 feet (3,700 metres) above sea level.
