"Longitude" must include east or west, and "latitude" must include north or south.

Without those two key bits of information, your point could be at any one of four

different places on the earth.

We're pretty sure that this question is posted by one of the many people who need

to keep checking roughly once a week to find out whether "40° north, 40° east" is

still in Turkey. But we'll play the game again, and show this time how important it is

to include east, west, north, or south in your description of where on earth you are.

40° north, 40° west:

In the north Atlantic Ocean, roughly midway between North America and Europe.

40° north, 40° east:

Still in northeastern Turkey, about 70 miles south-southeast of Trabzon. Hasn't moved an inch.

40° south, 40° west:

In the south Atlantic Ocean, about 1,100 miles southeast of Buenos Aires.

40° south, 40° east:

In the southern Indian Ocean, about 865 miles southeast of Durban South Africa.

Looking over these results, we're convinced the question must have come from

one of our Turkish arkadaşim again. Guys, hold onto the answer this time. The

point ain't gonna move in your lifetime.
