Type 1 is the most common of the 3 Polioviruses that causes the Polio disease.
Prior to the iron lung, the most common cause of death from polio was paralysis of the diaphragm muscles causing suffocation from inability to breathe.

FDR was disabled by polio. A common disease that there was no cure for back then. Later on in the 1950's one man found the vaccine for polio. So, polio is no longer an issue.
