Rickettsia rickettsii is the cause of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) and is the prototype bacterium in the spotted fever group of rickettsiae. Rickettsia rickettsii is found in the Americas and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks. The bacterium infects human vascular endothelial cells, producing an inflammatory response. The pathogenesis of RMSF is discussed in some detail below.
Rickettsia prowazekii, a gram-negative aerobic bacteria that causes epidemic typhus, can be found in lice which can then be transmitted to people. Epidemic typhus is present in parts of Africa, Central America, and South America.
Louse-borne typhus caused by Rickettsia prowazekii is common in periods of time where there is poor hygiene and crowded living conditions such as war, poverty, and famine. Human lice spreads the bacteria by biting into human and then defecating into the bite.
The symptoms of this kind of typhus can be quite devastating. Besides the fever, chills, and rashes all over the body, a person can have mental changes such as changes in personality. There may also be hypotension and gangrene.
Usually after the initial onset of infection, the person may recover or die within 3 weeks. There is a 50% mortality rate in adults over 50 years old.

Rickettsia, the bacteria commonly carried by tics, causes Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and other illnesses, does not have a vaccine. See the related links for more information.
Yersinia Pestis is a bacterium that undergoes reproduction through fission, an asexual form of reproduction that occurs in approximately 1.25 hours.
Rickettsia rickettsii is native to the New World and causes the malady known as Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). RMSF is transmitted by the bite of an infected tick while feeding on warmblooded animals, including humans. Man is an accidental host in the rickettsia-tick life cycle and is not required to maintain the rickettsiae in nature.
