I'm sorry that i can't answer this however, I was told today from Volkswagon Customer Service that the MAF is covered by an extended warranty for 7 years. If it is the problem then you might wanna contact VW customer service in Rochester Hills Mich and find out if your car is covered.
The solenoid electrical sensor is responsible for allowing a shift in gears. The sensor in a Jetta VR6 can be fixed by a dealer mechanic.

WHAT MOTOR IS IN THE CAR? vr6 V6
It is on the side of the oil pan. Which is under the car. You will see it almost near the bottom on the oil pan and it will have wires running to it.
You can buy a Jetta VR6 for example on eBay or carsforsale. Or search a carshop near by you and asked for a Jetta VR6. I am sure you will find you dream car.
I'm sure there are diagnostics that the dealer and possibly other independent shops can run to determine if the MAF is in spec. Some symptoms that occured on my 1.8t (before the Check Engine light came on and MAF code stored) were: Stalling on first start when cold (outside temperature below 50F / 10C, significant lack of power when driving when the engine was cold, and unstable idle when the engine was cold. From what I've been told, these are typical symptoms for a bad Mass Air Flow sensor in a 2001 Jetta 1.8t. There is a campaign covering mass air flow sensors, but I'm not sure if it applies to the VR6 model. In addition, the VR6 MAF sensor may be different from that of the 1.8t and hence may have different symptoms. Good luck.
The Intake Air Tmperature Sensor is incorporated in the Mass Airflow Meter.
2000 Jetta VR6 has a timing chain, NOT a timing belt
The knock sensor for a 2.8 vr6 is located on the side of the block. It is right against the hose for the oil cooler.
I just had the thermostat housing replaced on my 99 Jetta VR6. It's on the right (driver's) side of the engine block. The battery and battery tray should be removed to get access to the thermostat.
