While facing the engine the alternator is on the left side toward the front just below the plastic engine coolant container. It has a grooved belt that extends from the alternator pully down around the air conditioning compressor the rearwards to the crankshaft pully and finally it loops around the automatic tensioner pully which is just below the alternator. I replaced one on my sons 97' it's not too difficult but, trust me you will! need a special tool (a really long handled wrench that's used to push the tensioner pully toward the rear of the vehicle to relieve the tension on the belt so it can be removed.) Even with the tool its tricky but without it it's almost impossible. Hope this helps.
