I was told at a dealership it would cost me about $3000 (Subaru Forester 2000). Cannot be more exact because when I started pushing for more precise explanation it happened to become a defective wire in the harness, not the transmisssion...
located on top of block, drivers side rear, single wire, one bolt mounting it to block. directly below throttle cables. Be sure to clean bolt threads with wire brush, and make sure block is clean.
Yes, on a 1999 Subaru Forester, the ribbon wire for cruise control is inside of the steering wheel. The same ribbon also controls the horn.

The motor that raises and lowers the antenna is controlled by a wire which is connected to the power switch in the stock radio. The wire from the antenna itself has nothing to do with raising and lowering the antenna. Touch the wires that were connected to the stock radio to a hot wire and see if the antenna starts to move. If if does, hook that wire to the wire from the new radio which is supposed to control the antenna motor. If there is no such wire, connect the antenna motor wire to the Accessory circut. The antenna will go up whenever the key is turned on. Or, you can get fancy and install a switch for it.
remove wheel and remove the plastic liner inside the fender. remove the radio and disconnect the antenna wire. Tape another, 10' long wire to the end of the antenna wire. Unscrew the nut around the antenna from on top. pull the antenna and antenna wire out through the fender. Tape the 10' long wire to the new antenna wire and pull it back through the dash to the radio.
the antenna is inside the right rear/side window. Take a close look and you will see the grid.

I have a 1999 Forester, but I imagine the 2003 is similar in this regard. You don't actually need to remove the headlamp to replace the bulb. On my car, I unplug the wire from the bulb at the back of the headlamp, remove the large rubber piece around the back of the bulb, unclip the clips that hold the bulb in place, remove and replace. Cheers! Mark This is a good answer and is so just as stated. Thanks Mark! RicT
This is what I have for a MY2004 2.0XT (Euro model), connected to a Blaupunkt Woodstock 52 head unit. Blue/Red stripe = Permanent +12V (Blaupunkt's Yellow) Yellow/Blue stripe = Ignition (Blaupunkt's Red) Purple = Illumination (Blaupunkt's Orange) Blue/White stripe = Auto Antenna (Blaupunkt's Blue) Black = Ground (Blaupunkt's Black) If you have an amplifier, Blaupunkt's switched 12V Remote wire is found in the Line Out harness, the Blue/Yellow stripe wire. Your head unit should have a wire marked as P. Antenna that's the wire you need to connect.
A fixed antenna is wired directly to the radio on a 1996 Honda Civic. Pull the center console off and find the antenna wire behind the radio. Tie a nylon to the antenna wire and pull the old unit out. Tie the new wire for the antenna to the nylon so it can be properly snaked back.
