The backup light switch on a 240 with an automatic transmission is mounted to the shifter.
To access the switch you need to remove the plastic cover with the PRND21 indicator. You will have to move the shifter to do all this, so make sure the car is off and the parking brake is set.
1. Remove the two screws at the front of the shifter housing cover.
2. Pull shifter back to any gear position
3. Carefully lift up the end of the cover where the screws were and slide it towards the rear. It should come off the metal clip that pokes through the rear of it.
Look to the right of the shifter stick - the plastic wedge is the switch. It is attached with two screws from the right side. After you remove them you should be able to pull it out after some wiggling and playing with the shifter.
Installation is the reverse.
