look strait down behind the left headlight.. you will se a square black "box" with a small rubber hose extending to the left from the top of it... that is the canaster.
the canister is located on the drivers side up front under the airfilter box

also referred to as the Vapor Canister Purge Valve and is in\on the charcoal evaporator canister. its under the floor above the spare tire location, locate the charcoal canister on the front of the gas tank and trace the vent line to the vent valve.
The EVAP canister on a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina is located under the rear of the vehicle. The spare tire has to be removed to reach it.

I own a 1996 Ford Escort LX 1.9L. My Canister is located under the air filter housing. Take out the air filter and the housing box for it and there it is, half under a piece of the frame. You will see a knob type thing dead center on top of it and two hoses on top. GOOD LUCK

on the 1996 grand am the evap canister is located on the passenger side, in the fender. would need to remove the coolant reservoir to reach.
1- Loose gas cap 2- Vacuum line off of fuel tank or evaporative charcoal canister 3- Bad evaporative vent solenoid 4- Bad wires to evap vent solenoid Its most likely the evaporative charcoal canister Zak.
