An exhaust gas recirculation valve, or "EGR" valve, is an emissions-control devise which reduces the amount of nitrogen which escapes into the atmosphere. The EGR does this by routing a portion of the exhaust gases back into the intake manifold, where those chemicals are burned for a second time in the combustion chambers. A defective EGR valve commonly results in a rough idle and a decrease in power and fuel efficiency. Chevrolet equipped its 1990 passengers cars with a ported-type EGR valve. Fortunately, this type of EGR valve is the easiest to test. Difficulty:Moderately EasyInstructionsThings You'll Need:Hand-vacuum pump1 Apply the parking brake and shift the transmission into either "Park" or "Neutral."2 Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.3 Turn the engine off.4 Inspect the rubber vacuum hose that attaches to the top of the EGR valve for signs of cracks or kinks. A damaged EGR hose should be replaced.5 Pull the rubber vacuum hose off of the top of the EGR valve.6 Press the hose which extends from the bottom of a hand-vacuum pump over the nipple on top of the EGR valve. This is the same nipple from which the rubber vacuum hose was attached to.7 Apply 10 inches of vacuum to the valve with the hand-pump.8 Position a mirror underneath the top of the EGR valve to inspect the valve's diaphragm. Are you sure that you need to replace the knock sensor. I have a 1996 G-20. It had 3 check engine codes. #1 was knock sensor, #2 was Egr valve, #3 was O2 sensor. I performed some testing and then replaced the EGR and canister control solenoid. It is located on the back side of the engine and is somewhat accessible from below. After it was replaced all 3 codes cleared within one week. A new unit was $100 from the dealer. It is possible to repair the old one if you are technically and financially inclined. step 1 test egr valve and the vacuum valve attached to it. step 2 remove the Egr and canister control solenoid valve. Test it by blowing air through it and then applying 12 volts to the solenoid. If the air flow does not change it is stuck. Replace or repair it.

While my recommendation is to completely replace the EGR valve, I will give you a website to order your part from, (I myself am shopping on the very website.) I will give you instructions on how to clean it, (If if it not completely corroded.) Buy a EGR Valve gasket and a good carburetor cleaner. Have a bucket handy and a standard set of tools. 1. Disconnect battery. 2. Remove EGR valve. 3. With your finger, push on the diaphragm, it should move with ease or slight pressure. If not, replace it. 4. With carburetor cleaner, spray it over the valve and parts, to remove carbon build up. Make sure you spray into the bucket for easy clean up. 5. Check the gasket seal surface and ensure it is clean and ready for install. 6. Assemble EGR valve with new gasket, and install. 7. Test run and check for leaks. And again.. Disconnect egr valve in a 2.2 dti?
You will need to know if the ECU checks if the EGR valve is functioning properly or not, if this is not the case it is safe to disconnect the EGR control, or close off the valve with eg. a sheet of metal. If the ECU does check for the functioning of the EGR valve, disabling the valve in any way will cause an error in the engine management which will most likely go to a "safe mode" which can easily rob you of 20% of your power. Check with a local tuning company or car dealer to find out if it is possible, it is different in every engine, even another 2.2dti from the same make might be quite different from yours. The advantages are less carbon being built-up in your intake, less carbon emissions, quicker throttle response at part-throttle. The downside is higher NOx emissions.

the EGR valve is located on top of the motor at the intake manifold. It is secured by (2) bolts and a large pipe underneath that needs to be loosened first. I suggest spraying on some rust disolver and waiting about 20 min. before starting. Use an adjustable crescent type wrench to loosen this nut. Once it is free then you loosent he other (2) bolts and unplug the sensor wire. Assembly is just inreverse of what was explained. By the way, doing it yourself will save you a lot of money. The dealers charge up to $200.00 and you can buy the valve for about $39.00 from a car parts store and have it in yourself in about 45 minutes.

it might be your egr valve. there is most likely a little piece of crud or carbon stopping the valve from closing all the way this causes a rough idle. 20 minute fix at a shop.
