The fuel pump on a Volkswagen Cabriol is located inside the gas tank. This allows it to use a more efficient pushing to send fuel to the engine.
Your fuel pump is located there and it could be the bearings on the pump or it could be getting air in the fuel is a lubricant for the bearings and when there is no fuel it is possible you could hear the bearings - my guess your fuel pump is packin up but do check for air leaks
