There should be a fuel pump inside the fuel tank, and also one on the frame rail between the rear tire and door on the driver's side.
There's one low pressure fuel pump in each fuel tank, and one high pressure fuel pump on the frame rail.
Not sure you understand so I will explain. The fuel pump delivers fuel from its in the tank location to the fuel rail and a pressure regulator makes sure the pressure is 30 to 40 psi at the injectors. The pump provides more fuel than the engine needs so this regulator sends fuel back to the pump assembly in the tank. This return line had its own pressure control which is less than the 30-40 that the engine sees. The tank has a low pressure (vapor pressure) line that sends fumes to the charcol canister near the front fender. The vapors in this canister are sucked into the intake to prevent air polution.
Fuel pressure is supose to be 9 to 13 LBS, no more and no less.Need to replace fuel pressure regulator. Did you just put a fuel pump in it ?If you did then they may have sold you the wrong pump for that year.
Your 1997 Sonoma has no carburetor. It is fuel injected. The injector may be not fully closing and thus causing a loss of fuel pressure. Try running a can of Seafoam or Techron fuel system cleaner in a full tank of fuel. Repeat at least twice. If that does not help you may have to replace the faulty injector and change the oil/filter which has become contaminated with fuel. You may also have a fuel leak, at the fuel filter or the fuel rail. Another possibility is a partially clogged fuel filter but not likely. Seafoam or any other additive will not fix this problem. Secondly these trucks do not have fuel injectors, they have fuel spiders with poppet injectors. Check your fuel pump prime pressure it should be a minimum of 58 psi. It will NOT run w/ 57 psi! If it is less than 58 replace your fuel pump. If it is 58 or more replace the fuel spider. Fuel filter should always be replaced when replacing pump or spider. Contaminated oil will not cause this problem either.
Hi There, We have a 2000 crown vic and literally just had to get a new fuel pump last week. Where I live (Southwestern Ontario, Canada) my total bill for a new fuel pump, a new strainer which they said they needed and labour came to $696 (that's with tax and with the "lesser" expensive fuel pump). This came from $86/hr shop rate, $250 for the fuel pump, not sure how much for the strainer off hand, a $58 "diagnosis"charge to identify the problem. Hope that helps.

58 gallons

according to the haynes manual the normal operating pressure for the n/a fuel rail should be 48 psi. If it is below that, you have a bad fuel pump. If you unplug the regulator vacuum hose and the fuel pressure goes above 58 psi, your regulator is shot.
It is 58 Liters.
