Open the driver's side door...there's a small door on the side of the dashboard that opens up. The fuses are inside there. There is also a fuse box under the hood on the passenger side at the top of the firewall so you could check there, too, for the trunk release but it should be on the fuse box inside the driver's door.
Check the release fuse first. Then check the relay, and the switch. If these are all ok, then check the solenoid at the release inside of the trunk.

The fuse for the trunk light on a 2001 Lincoln LS is in the trunk. It is fuse number 4. It is a red 10A mini fuse. The trunk fuses are in the spare tire compartment. Lift up the cover in the trunk and latch it. You should see the spare tire and the car's battery. Next to the battery is a black fuse box. It has a lid that you can swing up and take off. The lid has the fuse numbering system for the box. Again, you are looking for number 4, which is a red 10A mini-fuse. It is the fourth one from the left in the upper row of mini-fuses. If you read the owners manual, page 184 lists the fuses for the trunk fuse box. The manual does not list the trunk light. However, the trunk light is on the same fuse as the fuel door release solenoid. Note that page 183 has a diagram of the fuses in this fuse bad and a diagram showing where the box is in relation to the spare tire and battery.
