The Duramax is a General Motors diesel v8 engine. There are five types of Duramax engines: LB7, LLY, 2006 LLY, LBZ, and LMM. The 8th number on the VIN number will identify the engine type.
Cylinder 6 as you look at the engine from the front is on the driver's side. 1 | 3 | 5 passengers side from front to rear. 2 | 4 | 6 on drivers side front to rear.

The valve adjustment procedure, on a 3054 Caterpillar diesel engine, begins with manually turning the engine to the number one cylinder. Tighten the valve screw with the cylinder at the top of the stroke. Doing this for each cylinder.
I'm not a mechanic / technician but I ASSUME the engine cylinder locations are numbered on the Ford 6.0 liter Diesel engine the same as the 7.3 Diesel firewall 7 - 8 5 - 6 3 - 4 1 - 2 front of vehicle
From what I have read , on the 7.3 liter Ford diesel ( I assume the 6.9 is the same ) the engine cylinder locations are numbered : firewall 7 - 8 5 - 6 3 - 4 1 - 2 front of vehicle
Duramax firing order 1 - 2 - 7 - 8 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 3. The placement is 1, 3, 5, 7 on one bank and 2, 4, 6, 8 on the other bank. The cylinder farthest forward is number 1.
I found mine on an older Toyota diesel 4 cylinder at the top of the block right before it mates with the head. It's right under the exhaust manifold. Not sure how easy it is to see with it on though.
