I am presuming you are asking about an e36 3 series.
Otherwise, if it is an e46 328i, go here - http://www.bimmerdiy.com/e46
There is a picture of where the oil filter is located, essentially in front of the motor, near the radiator.
Hope that helps.

AnswerIf you asking about an E36 the original location for the oil filter is on the top of the engine, right side next to the thermostat and engine cover. It is in a housing.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What you will discover with the E-36 328i is that the oil filter isn't one of those orange steel FRAM cans that your used to unscrewing and replacing in your 71 Chevy Impala. BMW oil filters consist of a corrugated paper element and a new rubber O ring. The housing is a permanent part of your car. My 97 has a big plastic cap on top that requires a 36mm wrench. Some people say they have a 13mm cap nut, and I have seen pics where people have an oil cap that unscrews with a 3/4 drive from a socket set.
A 2008 328i BMW transmission does not have an oil filter. Only motor oil casings have filters in them. The 2008 328i does have a transmission filter but not a transmission oil filter.
Turn it counterclockwise to remove.
Just open the hood and look straight down. You will need a 36mm socket to unscrew the top.
Engine oil with filter change takes 6.5 liters (6.9 US qt)
the 328i BMW if it is the M52 engine should be using 5w30 synthetic oil, same as the 2.8 Z3
6.9 Quarts
2796 cc
A 1997 BMW 328i uses standard 10w-30 engine oil. This provides a good balance of protection and heat dissipation for the engine.
It is located in the oil filter housing, that is located under the hood in front of the engine block by the radiator.
10-40 full synthetic castrol
Were is the oil filter for a 2005 bmw
BMW E36 service manual requires 6.9 qt of synthetic oil
