A Classic Beetle doesn't have one, believe it or not. There's a screen in the oil sump. It can be cleaned with a little petrol. just make sure you don't break the oil sump gasket when you refit it. You'll see it underneath the car. It's a ring with nuts around it.

The 1974 VW Super Beetle engine oil capacity is 3.5 quarts. Three quarts of oil will be in the engine and one half quart of oil will be in the oil filter.

If you do not see a screw on type filter then your Beetle has the filter or screen under the drain plate. Remove the 6-8 small bolts holding the plate in place and you will see the filter.

For an aircooled VW Beetle, use Castrol GTX2. It has the right viscosity.
