That would depend on which engine you have
On the 4.0 liter OHV / pushrod design engine ( 8th " character " of the VIN is an " X " ) the engine oil pressure sending unit is on the drivers side of the engine below the Power Steering pump
On the 4.0 liter SOHC engine I BELIEVE it is on the front of the engine in the area of the lower rad hose ( 8th " character " of the VIN is an " E " )
The oil pressure gauge in a 1999 Ford Explorer is ELECTRIC
On my 1995 Ford Explorer , which has the 4.0 litre EFI , V6 engine , the sending unit for my oil pressure gauge is on the drivers side of the engine below the power steering pump
It means that the oil pressure switch is showing low pressure.

The oil pressure switch is located by the oil filter on a 1979 Ford F-150. This will be by the lower drivers side of the engine.
The oil pressure switch should be above the oil filter on the back of the engine on a 2.2L.
the sending unit is located near the bottom of the block on the left ( driver side) it is on the same harness as the oil level switch
The oil pressure switch is right under the alternator bracket or power steering pump

On the 5.4 liter the pressure switch is on the Oil filter housing.
do you see the lower radiator hose? it is close to it, where it goes into the water pump it has a wire going to it (if it is 4.0L ) look for the oil filter,it is next to it in the V8.
