For ALL engines (except VW air cooled) the oil pump is inside, in the oil pan. Remove the oil pan to find the oil pump. You'll see a pickup tube (dip tube) that goes from the oil pump into the bottom of the pan to suck oil. Follow the tube back up to the oil pump. A word of warning. If you have low oil pressure it's almost NEVER the oil pump. Oil pumps should be replaced every time the engine is rebuilt, but they don't wear out very fast. Low oil pressure is typically caused by worn rod or main bearings.

You will need to drain the oil from your 1997 Pontiac Grand Am oil pan. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Remove the oil pump retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new oil pump.
What year is the car and what engine does it have?
The oil pump is located inside the oil pan. When you remove the oil pan the pump will be bolted to the engine block inside the oil pan.
