the starter on a exploder is drivers side near where the transmission hooks into the engine. it is up in the middle of the engine more or less but not too bad to get too.

I'm not a mechanic / technician but I believe the answer is ( no ) From what I have read there are ( 3 ) different engine blocks for the Ford 4.0 OHV engine ( 1991 to 1994 Ford Explorer ) ( 1995 and 1996 Ford Explorer ) ( 1997 to 2000 Ford Explorer )

The starter motor is on the Right side of the vehicle just below the exhaust manifold.

In the power distribution box in the engine compartment, the starter relay is in location # 6 for a 2001 Ford Explorer. Also in the power distribution box is a red color 50 amp maxi-fuse for the starter relay/ignition switch.
