The started is located at the front of the engine compartment, near the middle. - It is located up and "behind" the front motor mount. As I recall, you have to remove this on the 3.3 or 3.8 engine to remove the starter. The best way to remove the motor mount is the three nuts and bolts at the bottom of the radiator support and then the bolts that mount it to the block. One is around and to the drivers side as I recall. I'm sorry if this is a little vague, but I've dropped and swapped enough A604/41TEs that I forget the small stuff.... I just Do It." Besides the wires that are bolted to the starter, there are three bolts on the 3.0 and 3.3/3.8 engines that hold it to the block. These are located on the transmission (drivers) side of the starter and bell housing. The top one also holds a wire loom clip, so be sure to put that back on when reassembling. The entire swap should take you about 45 minutes if you aren't familiar with the layout.

The starter has failed and needs replaced. Somthing inside the starter makes connection when you tap it.
