it could be your thermo stat
REPLACE THERMO STAT/CHECK TO REPLACE THERMO CENSOR!
Bad thermo, replace. The thermo senses that the pilot is lit and opens gas valve, also could be bad or blocked gas valve.
thermo stat is in housing underneath the radiator cap attached to the head
Anywhere you want to control something according to temperature. Thermo = having to do with temperature and Stat= from status or state.
a bad thermostat is one cause , second the water pump may be defective, and last you may have a engine block problem , first change the thermo stat and put in a new gasket with the thermo stat , but also , if this doesnt work check the little sending unit in side of engine block on the side of engine for it could be sending fake readings to your temp unit in dash board , if you install a new sending unit and a thermo stat and gasket , then the sending unit in dashboard is bad , providing your water pump is working !
the timing
a quick and easy way is to remove the thermostat put it in a pot of water with a thermometer in it and crank up the heat. If it opens at the right temperature you know its good. The temp should be stamped on the housing of the stat.
cooling fans or plugged radiator or hoses.
Yes you do. it is there to speed up the rise in temperature of the engine components to reach optimal operating temperature sooner which prevents damage to the engine.
it could have a air lock in the system and if it doesnt the head gasket is problay no good and even possible that you have a cracked head
The thermo-stat may need changed or you may need a lower pressure radiator cap - Make sure you keep an eye on you could blow the head gasket -- also you should check your oil to make sure that water isn't in the oil .
